Within-night variation in respiratory effort preceding apnea termination and EEG delta power in sleep apnea.

چکیده
We studied the within-night variability of the maximum esophageal pressure deflection before apnea termination (DPmax) in nine patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea as an index of the arousal threshold and the mean electroencephalogram (EEG) delta power for each 30 s as an index of the timing of sleep cycles. Periodicity in the time variation of delta power and DPmax was analyzed by determining their power spectral density and their relationship determined by cross correlation. DPmax and delta power varied cyclically and in phase with a major periodicity (major peak in power spectral density) of 117.6 +/- 8.8 (SE) min. The correlation between the values of DPmax and delta power was significant (P < 0.001) in each subject (mean r = 0.47 +/- 0.03), and the coherence between DPmax and delta power at their dominant frequency was high. Within cycles of non-rapid-eye-movement sleep, DPmax and delta power increased, reaching peak values on average at or after midcycle. These findings suggest that the arousal threshold to airway occlusion in patients with obstructive sleep apnea varies cyclically during the night synchronous to the underlying cycles of sleep.

Sleep quality under mild hypoxia in men with low hypoxic ventilatory response.
The present study evaluated whether slow-wave sleep and whole-night delta power of the non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) decrease during sleep at a simulated altitude of 2000 m, and whether such changes related to measures of hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR). This study consisted of two parts; in the first, HVR was measured in 41 subjects and each seven subjects w...
متن کاملElectroencephalographic and respiratory activities during acute intermittent hypoxia in anesthetized rats.
Cortical activity and respiratory responses to intermittent hypoxia were studied in anesthetized, paralyzed, vagotomized, and artificially ventilated rats. Respiratory responses to hypoxic exposure consisted of stimulation of phrenic and hypoglossal activity and a subsequent decline of the activity up to apnea. The respiratory response to hypoxia was accompanied by a gradual decrement of the to...

متن کاملObstructive sleep apnea syndrome and non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy: a case control study
Background: Sleep apnea is temporary cessation or absence of breathing during sleep. Significant increase in blood pressure is clinically seen in apneic episodes. The aim of this study was to examine sleep apnea syndrome as a risk factor for non- arthritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) in a case control study. Methods: Nineteen NAION patients (9 men and 10 women) and 31 age and ...
متن کاملEEG spectral power changes before, during and after obstructive sleep apneas
Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is a very common sleep disorder that is associated with several neurocognitive impairments. The present study aims to assess the power spectral density before, during and after apnea episodes, through the use of autoregressive modeling of the electroencephalographic (EEG) multivariate signal obtained with Polysomnography. The results demonstrate that ther...
